Health Related Care

Wheels Team – This ministry helps connect volunteers who will provide rides to church or medical appointments for those who cannot drive themselves.  For more information, contact Wilma Riddell at 913-345-9018.

Meals – The simple gift of a meal can nourish the body and spirit of a family encountering illness, death, or other overwhelming circumstances.  Small groups, Adult Communities and other individuals often respond to these opportunities by preparing and delivering meals.  Additionally we have a meals team made of individuals who are willing to be called upon when other situations arise or in such times where the need lasts longer and a larger team is needed.

You don’t have to be a gourmet cook.  All that is needed is a willing heart.  Volunteers can help out once or as often as opportunities present themselves.

Medical Equipment – This ministry can help relieve the burden on those requiring medical equipment due to injury or illness whether they attend Hillcrest or simply live in the area.  Here are just a few of the items available to address short- and longer-term medical equipment needs:

  • Cane
  • Crutches
  • Walker
  • Hospital Bed
  • Shower Seat/Support
  • Commode
  • Wheelchair
  • Motorized Wheelchair
  • Grab Rail
  • many other items too!  Call 913-901-2312 to see if we have what you need.

This ministry provides an opportunity to serve those with medical needs in these ways:

  • Donate unneeded medical equipment
  • Store equipment
  • Pick up and/or deliver equipment
  • Set up specialized equipment

Parish Nursing of Hillcrest is partnering with The American Red Cross to provide flu shots this year.  Come September 17 any time between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm to room 204 in the central hallway to prepare yourself for this year’s flu season.  Cost is $25 and there will also be a pneumonia shot available (for an additional $25) for those who want that precaution (recommended once after the age of 65).

Blue Cross/Blue Shield insurance is now accepted and the American Red Cross can send claims directly to them.  Other insurances that are accepted are Coventry, Medicare part B, and the Medicare supplements, such as Humana and Advantra.

**The CDC recommends the seasonal flu shot to all pregnant women.  It is not necessary to bring a note from the obstetrician to obtain a flu shot.  Our nurses will carry thimerosal-free vaccine and will use that type of vaccine for anyone that is pregnant.

***Beginning this fall, the 2010-2011 Seasonal Flu Vaccine will protect you against three types of viruses, including protection against the H1N1 virus. For more information, visit http://www.flu.gov/news/blogs/blog20100222.html.

**The pneumonia shot can be given at the same time as the flu shot.  You may also donate blood with no wait time after receiving those vaccinations.

Parish Nursing ministers in a variety of quiet ways that express God’s tender care.  Some of the ways Hillcrest Parish Nurses provide God’s touch is through one-to-one health consultations with both those in the Hillcrest family and referrals from our community.  They also provide health information and education, assessments and evaluations, health care referrals and resources to support families dealing with a wide range of health challenges.

Parish Nurses at Hillcrest are registered nurses who have medical knowledge in a variety of areas and a desire to serve within the congregation and the community by applying medical and nursing expertise to share God’s love.  If you are interested in getting more information on Parish Nursing at Hillcrest or becoming a Parish Nurse, contact Lois Osborn at 913-642-8578 or Mary Rowlands at 913-901-2306.

This ministry also offers the church and local community intermittent health education and training in a range of areas, including CPR training, health and fitness, and sex education from a biblical perspective.

Parish Nursing provides blood pressure checks every 2nd Sunday of the month in Mary Rowland’s office off the central hallway.
